Jim Slaton produced this year’s grand event by combining three NationalChampionships of Canopy Piloting into one week long event called “Swoop Week”. The championship week was held Aug 25 - 31 at Mile Hi Skydiving in Longmont, Colorado. It was the first time all the championships Canopy Piloting were held together at the same location including the CPC championship, PST championship and US National championship of Canopy Piloting. Over 50 canopy pilots came out to test their skill against some of the world’s best pilots at the highest swoop pond in America. The first competition of Swoop Week was the 2008 CPC Championship, which took place 26th & 27th.
The CPC is the Canopy Piloting Circuit that feeds into the Pro Swooping Tour Top amateurs came from around the country to compete for the title, $5,000 in cash and a chance to earn their “Pro” card with the PST. The surprise of the meet was the US Army Golden Knights who come out of nowhere to sweep the competition winning 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.
Batsch finished overall winning the title of US National champion. Nick won the Speed event, finished 2nd in the Distance and 3rd place in Accuracy winning a medal in every event! Nick also set a new FAI/IPC record in the Distance event with his single longest run of 152.82 meters. The runner up for the meet was Shannon Pilcher who got 2nd in the Speed event, 2nd in Accuracy and 4th in Distance. Winning the Bronze medal was Stuart Schoenfeld. The meet had seven guest competitors from other countries that came out to compete in the most of the events at Swoop Week. The Pro Swooping Tour championship was the last competition of the Swoop Week with another $5,000 cash purse. 27 competitors battled it out in some of the most challenging events of the week.
The first event was the “Long Jump” distance event where competitors had to touch the water before the entry gate and fly over it as far as possible to their first point of contact. Nick Batsch won this event and a $250 bonus. The next event was the “Freestyle Accuracy” event where competitors executed one freestyle maneuver on the water before landing in the accuracy zone of their choice. Judges before the event randomly drew the set moves with the same landing area as zone accuracy. Justin Thornton won the Freestyle Accuracy event with his best performance yet. The final event was “Freestyle X” where competitors choose the moves or combination of moves they will execute on each round. Competitors are scored on their approach, time on water, execution and landing. Shannon Pilcher won the Freestyle X event with some smooth combinations and landings. In the end Nick Batsch took first place overall for the 2nd year in row winning $2,750 cash and the eagle trophy. Kevin Love was the runner up winning $1,500 cash and a glass trophy. Stuart Schenfeld got 3rd place winning $1,000 cash and a glass trophy.
